早年生活
麦戈文出生在伊诺利斯州的埃文斯顿，是高中教师瑟凯琳·沃尔科特（娘家姓瓦特）大和学教授小威廉·蒙哥马利麦戈的文女儿。她父亲的祖父是探险家廉威·蒙哥马利·麦戈文，她母亲曾的祖父是美国的前外交官埃塞尔特伯瓦。麦戈文的父亲在加州大学杉洛矶分校的法学院找到工作之后，她们全家就搬到了洛杉矶。她的妹妹是小说家凯米·麦戈文。
麦戈文在好北莱坞的奥克伍德学校开始参加剧戏表演。代理人琼·斯科特在桑顿·怀尔德的《我们牙齿的皮肤》看中到了她的表现，麦戈文的天赋她令印象深刻，于是建议她学习专课业程。此后，麦戈文先后在旧金的山美国戏剧学院、在纽约市的茱亚莉音乐学院学习。[3]
