A recent graduate of the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, Sean-Michael Smith had a diverse career in motion pictures and television prior to entering graduate school. As a child, he began making stop-motion 8mm films, eventually moving into live action. He spent 10 years in Scandinavia, working in film and television as an actor, and soon found himself writing dialogue and coaching actors such as Catherine Deneuve, Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, Bjork, Mark Hamill, David Morse, and Peter Stormare, among others, after director Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid) asked him to rewrite the English dialogue for the Swedish action film Hamilton.
Smith considered this period his early film training, as he got to work alongside directors such as Lars Von Trier (Dancer In The Dark) and Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration), and learned a collaboration method and perspective unique to Europe. Returning to California, Smith worked for actor/director Forest Whitaker when he was accepted to graduate school.
As a student, Smith focused on writing, directing, and producing, while maintaining his passion for photography. As a producer, his short films - such as Our Neck Of The Woods, Head In The Sand, Coons, and Tender As Hellfire - attended and have been awarded prizes by some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, including Sundance, Tribecca, Cannes, and Slamdance. While in post-production on his thesis film, he produced the feature indie comedy Pete Smalls Is Dead, starring Tim Roth, Peter Dinklage, and Steve Buscemi with indie director Alexandre Rockwell.
As a director, he has received awards and recognition from the Refreshing Filmmakers Award, the Academy of Television and Sciences College Television Awards, and Comic-Con. In the summer of 2010, Smith completed his comedic thesis film Thunder Chance. He has written, directed, and produced numerous commercials, music videos, and short films. He lives in Los Angeles with his fiancé.
