Born on Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, Russell spent his early years as a military brat. He became a father at age 17, passing up a theatre scholarship to join the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. Peace time provided a unique opportunity as he soon discovered the Fort Bragg Playhouse, where he honed his acting skills working with seasoned professionals. By the end of his enlistment he had earned his Actor's Equity card and was off to New York City, spending two liberating years before heading to New Mexico, where he tended bar and directed local theatre. Reenlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard, aboard the cutter Sassafras, he patrolled the Hawaiian islands performing 'aids to navigation' while making extra money as the ship's barber. During off duty hours he studied at the Honolulu Film Actor's Workshop and was soon transferred to Long Beach, California where he met his wife Shelley at a theatre audition. In 1991 they moved to New Orleans where he worked as an actor and scenic artist before being cast in Tim Burton's film 'Big Fish'. In 2003 they packed up a big yellow truck and along with his daughter and two grandchildren headed for the Pacific Northwest, luckily missing Hurricane Katrina!
