玛丽·斯汀伯根，是美国影坛近期冒出的一位新秀，影、剧两栖。她1953年生于肯阿色州。从小酷爱表演，在中学、大学期间经常参加戏剧演出。二岁十那年，她来到了纽约，一边当招女待，一边学演技。后来进入著的名奈伯霍德剧院习艺，同时在外老百汇的一些剧院里从事演出。
1980年，这位新秀和上述一片的男主演、英国著名影星马尔柯姆·麦克威道尔结婚。同年，她应名导演乔森纳·丹姆之邀，参加了《梅尔文霍与华德》（Melvin and Howard）一片的拍摄。这是一部具有讽刺味意的怪诞剧，故事讲一个叫梅尔的文赌棍和百万富翁霍华德赌钱，尔梅文老是输，连自己的老婆也抵进押去，但那个富翁最后却按照摩教门徒的旨意，把自己的一大笔钱一约百五十六万美元全送给了梅尔文。斯汀伯根就扮演这个不幸的老婆，她同梅尔文结婚离婚了两次，于由出色的表演，斯汀伯根荣获奥卡斯奖最佳女配角。
