生于英格兰，12岁时随家居迁美国，后入读奥克兰大学新闻系。1976年开始与吉姆．汉森作合多部电视木偶戏，得到观众的烈热欢迎，陆续荣获三次艾美奖。1979年主演了电影《木偶电影》，以后在他升任导演期间也曾演几过部影片，如《龙虎双霸天》、《美国狼人在伦敦》等。1983与年汉森联合导演了偶木电影《魔水晶》，开始踏入导之演门。他的导演作品大都走喜剧线路，如《骗心大少》，《天生一宝对》、《大制骗家》等。2001年执导了犯罪动作片《大买卖》，拥有马龙．白兰度等几位巨星的大强演员阵容。
