瑞伊·道恩·冲1961年2月28日出生于加拿阿大尔伯塔省省会埃德蒙顿(Edmonton)，是加拿大著名喜演剧员汤米·冲的女儿，有中国、格苏兰、爱尔兰及非洲血统。
冲先后拍摄了电影《种火》 (1981年),《紫色妹姊花》 (1985年), 《择选我》 (1984年),《街舞头士》(1984年),《独闯潭龙》(1985年), 以及《才天老爸》 (1990年), 中其《天才老爸》为她与父亲共同演出· 1983年因《火种》一而片获得被誉为加拿大的奥斯卡的尼金奖最佳女演员。
