Emilio Delgado, is an actor and singer, best known as "Luis" the Fix-it Shop owner from Sesame Street. He was born in Calexico, California and spent the early part of his childhood living across the border in Mexicali, Mexico in an extended family household that included grandparents, mother, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He started working at an early age in Mexicali shining shoes and working in his uncle's bicycle repair shop. During this time, Emilio, a native born American citizen, crossed the border into the United States to attend school in Calexico, California, where he began performing in school plays and musicals. As a teenager he moved with his immediate family to Los Angeles and graduated from Glendale High School, where his interest and passion for theater, acting and music intensified. The summer following high school graduation, he received a scholarship to study acting in Hollywood with the famed Russian actress Eugenie Leontovich. He continued his theater studies at Glendale College and California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts), and performed as a singer and guitarist in many folk groups and Mexican romantic trios.

In 1968 Emilio began working as a professional actor in the Emmy Award winning PBS series Cancion De La Raza (KCET). In 1971, the producers of Sesame Street in New York, in order to expand their cast to include Latinos, cast Emilio as Luis. With perhaps the exception of Ricardo Montalban and Anthony Quinn, in those years -- for the most part, roles for Latinos were limited to menial occupations, drug dealers, gang members and marginal characters. So landing the role of "Luis" was all the more meaningful to Emilio because it offered children a positive portrayal of a Mexican American on television -- someone with whom they could identify and emulate.

He can quite possibly claim the longest running part for a Chicano actor in a continuing television series for his 37 years on Sesame Street. Some notable awards he has received include, The Impact Award 2000 from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, The HOLA Ilka Award in 2005 and on August 30, 2009 in Los Angeles he and the cast of Sesame Street will receive the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for Sesame Street's 40 years on the air.

In addition to his work on Sesame Street, Emilio has worked in theater in LA and New York and worked in other television classics such as Hawaii 5-0, Quincy, Police Story, Cosby and the acclaimed I Will Fight No More Forever, co-staring with James Whitmore. During the early 1980s he was a regular cast member of the Lou Grant Show, in the role of Ruben Castillo, National Editor. In Los Angeles, he was a company member of Inner City Rep, The Group Repertory, and LA Rep. In 1972 Emilio's first Broadway credit was as understudy to Raul Julia's Proteus in The Public Theatre's hit musical, Two Gentlemen of Verona and was personally cast for the role by the legendary Joe Papp. Recent theatre credits include, Floating Home (HExTC), Boxing 2000 (Richard Maxwell NYC Players), Dismiss All the Poets (New York Fringe Festival 2002), Nilo Cruz's A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (Shakespeare Theatre of NJ), Dinosaurios (IATI), Night Over Taos (INTAR NY) and How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents (Round House Theatre), Retrospective (Manhattan Theatre Source) and most recently appearing in Asolo Repertory's production of 'Hamlet, Prince of Cuba. Some of his recent television appearances are Cupid, Law & Order, Criminal Intent, Law & Order: SVU and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Music has always been an important part of his life and in 2009 Emilio recorded and performed in concert at Carnegie Hall with the band Pink Martini. He has also made guest appearances with the band in several venues in Portland, New York City and Montreal.

Through the years, Emilio has contributed many hours of his time to worthy causes such as the United Farm Workers, Head Start, and at present, The 52nd Street Project which promotes theater arts to kids living in New York City's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.

Emilio and Carole were married in Bermuda. He has two children, a son Aram and a daughter Lauren. He and his wife live in New York City.
